Contagious began his career under Julia Beck (GER) and Reed Kessler (USA), before joining Ward’s stables in 2018 with the support of Beechwood Stables, Lise and Annabel Revers, and Max Amaya. Initially acquired as a promising Grand Prix prospect, Contagious went on to surpass all expectations, becoming a true star on the world stage.

Together with Ward, Contagious delivered numerous standout performances for the U.S. team. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the pair claimed team silver. In 2022, they competed at the FEI World Championships in Herning, and in 2023, they earned team gold and individual bronze at the Pan American Games in Santiago.

“With immense pride and gratitude, we announce the retirement of Contagious,” Ward wrote on social media. “He came to us from Reed Kessler, who did a wonderful job developing him. Thanks to our incredible partners, we welcomed him into our team in 2018. Contagious has always given his all — and often more. What we hoped would be a good Grand Prix horse became a championship icon. His crowning moment was certainly the Olympic silver in Tokyo. He will now enjoy a well-earned retirement at the beautiful Beechwood Stables in Weston, Massachusetts.”

Ward also expressed heartfelt thanks to the entire team behind Contagious, especially Lee and Erica McKeever, Owen Rogers, and Virginie Casterman for their years of dedication.

Equnews wishes Contagious a happy and relaxing retirement!
