Sad news from the equestrian world: the stallion VDL Bubalu has passed away at the age of 32. Under the saddle of Dutch show jumper Jur Vrieling, the KWPN-approved stallion (by Baloubet du Rouet x Nimmerdor) grew into an absolute star of the international showjumping circuit and a cornerstone of the Dutch team. Through his offspring and breeding, Bubalu leaves behind a lasting legacy, including in Belgian studbooks and stables.
VDL Bubalu was bred by the VDL Stud family. Under Vrieling, the powerful grey stallion made sports history. The absolute pinnacle of their career took place in 2012, when the combination made a crucial contribution to the team silver medal for the Netherlands at the London Olympic Games. Two years later, they were also crowned world champions with the Dutch team at the World Equestrian Games in Caen (2014).
With the passing of Bubalu, a chapter comes to an end for an iconic sports horse that not only shone at the highest level, but also left his mark on global showjumping as a sire.
In an emotional post, Jur Vrieling says goodbye to his faithful partner: "Dear Bubalu, you were so much more than just a horse to me. You were my partner, my teammate, my friend, and a once-in-a-lifetime horse. Together we shared some of the most unforgettable moments of my career and fulfilled dreams that once seemed impossible."
Vrieling emphasizes that the memory of the stallion extends far beyond his impressive record of achievements. "Above all the medals and titles, I will especially remember your character, your fighting spirit, and our mutual trust. You gave me everything. Rest in peace, my friend. You will never be forgotten."
After his sporting career, VDL Bubalu enjoyed a well-deserved retirement on the grounds of VDL Stud, where he received the best care until the very end.
