Today we dive behind the scenes of Equitom's equine clinic once again to tell you the story of Lady. The 11-year-old surrogate mare was rescued from the slaughterhouse by Silence Animal after ending up there because of destructive osteoarthritis in her knee.
"Lady was rescued from the hands of the slaughterhouse by Silence Animal, an organization dedicated to helping neglected and sick horses. She had ended up here because she was suffering from a very severe form of osteoarthritis that prevented her from even standing up. Her condition was so severe that her leg grew crooked. She had also become chronically laminitic on her other leg due to overuse. However, we felt she deserved a second chance. That's why we brought her to Equitom," says Dehlia of Silence Animal.
"When Lady first arrived here, she was much too weak and skinny to operate on her right away," explains Tom Marien. "She was so skinny that she didn't have the strength to stand up without help. As you can see in the video below, the operation itself was very tough. So at the start it was impossible to operate on her. Meanwhile she has had her operation and as if by miracle there were no complications. She still has a long way to go but there is no doubt that this mare is very brave. She has grabbed the second chance she got with both hands and her future looks a lot brighter", he concludes.
