Last week, the international equestrian world was shocked by the sudden passing of Jenny Ducoffre. Ducoffre was the groom for Belgian show jumper Jos Verlooy for many years. She won several awards, including one last year at Indoor Friesland and earlier at Hickstead, for her excellent care of the horses and her constant readiness to help others. The younger and less experienced grooms saw Ducoffre as a role model and their "Show Mom," or Horse Show Mother.
The passing away of Ducoffre has had a significant impact. This is evident from the many initiatives taken by various grooms and competition organizations. Several international competitions are holding a minute of silence this week to commemorate Ducoffre. In Sankt Gallen, this was done before the veterinary inspection. In Le Touquet, it took place on Thursday morning in the main arena before the first combination entered. At the Global Champions Tour in St. Tropez, nearly all the grooms wore something black at the vet check, and a minute of silence was also observed there.
Azelhof Calls for Respect
Today, the veterinary inspection for the international competition in Lier is on the schedule. The organization has issued a call for everyone—riders, owners, and grooms—to attend this inspection wearing a black t-shirt. This is a sign of respect for Jenny.
Condolence Register
Following requests from several grooms to "do something together" for Ducoffre and her family, the international grooms' platform HorseGrooms has set up an online condolence register, or "Memorial Page," where anyone who wishes can leave a memory of Ducoffre or a message for her family.
Thanks to a financial contribution from Enviro Equine & Pet, an international company specializing in supplements and care products for horses, all memories and messages will be compiled into a book that will be sent to the family in a few weeks. To leave a message on the Memorial Page, you can follow this link: Memorial Page.
Ducoffre will be buried in Germany on June 18.
