According to the FEI statutes, the FEI is the sole governing body for FEI disciplines, which is not the case for reining. Earlier it was made clear that the NHRA had no intention of handing everything over. The delegates approved the change to the FEI statutes, including the removal of reining as one of the disciplines. The FEI did promise, according to Inside the Games, to support initiatives by national federations 'to preserve the FEI's legacy'.

Reining was one of seven equestrian disciplines under the management of the FEI. The other disciplines include show jumping, dressage, para dressage, eventing, driving and para driving, endurance and voltige.
