Equnews annual recap: "September auction month par excellence"

The month of September was notable for some remarkable auction records. We also traveled to Calgary for the most impressive Grand Prix in the world, and the best jumping prospects competed against each other at the World Championships for young horses in Lanaken, Belgium.

September was first and foremost the auction month par excellence. The turnover of the Fences Elite Auction exceeded the million-euro mark for the first time in its history, the most expensive foal ever was sold at the Equbreeding.auction (360,000 euros for Emerald's full brother, Das Machine), and the Zangerheide Auction also broke records with the sale of Emmerby vd Berghoeve Z (sold for 300,000 euros to USA's Spy Coast Farm).

For the top of the top sport, we traveled to Calgary, Canada this month. There the Swedish team once again outclassed the competition, winning The Spruce Meadows Nations Cup. Victory in the breathtaking 1.70m Rolex Grand Prix went to Daniel Deusser and his champion mare Killer Queen VDM. The same Deusser also put the LGCT Grand Prix van New York in his name with Tobago. Furthermore, the Longines EEF Nations Cup Final was held in Warsaw, where the gold went to the Italian team.

Further world-class sport could be found in Lanaken, Belgium, where the FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship for Young Horses was held. The class for five-year-olds was won by Gerard O'Neill and Bp Goodfellas, Ethen Ahearne and ABC Saving Grace secured another Irish win in the six-year-olds class, and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson sent Caillan to the final win in the seven-year-olds class. In the 'Sires of the World' class also held there, Patrik Stühlmeyer and Drako de Maugre came out on top.

Less news came with Beezie Madden's announcement that she was going to put her professional career on hold for a while after being diagnosed with a tumor. Furthermore, the equestrian world was rocked by a devastating fire at Paul Schockemöhle's brood farm, which lasted for no less than three days. The equestrian world also had to say goodbye this month to Wim Schröder's GP horse Eurocommerce Montreal (29), Carlos Ribas' legendary Mumu (39), and Patrik Kittel's championship horse Deja (18). Team Harmony in turn announced the well-deserved retirement of 17-year-old Ornellaia after a long and successful career.
