The 5-year-old daughter of Galileo—Mariah's Storm, was one of four seven-figure sales on Tuesday. Offered by Lady Carolyn Warren's Highclere Stud for John Sikura of Hill 'n' Dale Farms and in foal to Dubawi, Hanky Panky was secured by John Ferguson for Sheikh Mohammed.
On the day, average price and median both showed increases, rising 1.2% and 12.9%, respectively, at last year's corresponding session. The average was 170,722 guineas ($269,890) and the median was 79,000 guineas ($124,889).
Overall, 162 horses sold for total receipts of 27,657,000 guineas ($43,722,398), down 5.2% from last year when 173 horses changed hands.
The clearance rate came in at 71.1%, compared with 73.3% on the sale's second day in 2014.
In addition to multiple group I winner and three-time leading sire Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat), session topper Hanky Panky is a half sister to group II winner You'resothrilling (Storm Cat), dam of classic winners Gleneagles and Marvellous and group III winner Coolmore. Another Storm Cat half brother, Freud , is a leading New York sire while Sadler's Wells' three-quarters sister Love Me Only produced group II winner Storm the Stars, who placed in the English and Irish Derbys this year.
Third in the 2013 Ballyogan Stakes (Ire-III) for trainer Aidan O'Brien, Hanky Panky delivered her first foal Feb. 23. From the first crop of Ashford Stud resident Declaration of War , the Elevage II-bred filly sold from Hill 'n' Dales Sales' agency to Glen Hill Farm for $800,000 at Keeneland November.
"It is a huge privilege to sell a mare such as this," said Warren, "and we thank John Sikura for entrusting us with her. She is a beautiful mare and ticked every box.
"There were a lot of different parties interested, and a lot of different people bidding. We are very pleased that Sheikh Mohammed bought her, he is such a huge supporter of the industry."
The day's second-best seller also broke the 2 million guineas mark. European champion Tiggy Wiggy sold for 2.1 million guineas ($3,319,848) to Coolmore's M.V. Magnier.
Trainer Richard Hannon's East Everleigh Stables presented the 3-year-old Kodiac filly, Europe's champion 2-year-old filly of 2014 who will be bred to Galileo in 2016. She won last year's Cheveley Park Stakes (Eng-I) and Lowther Stakes (Eng-II) amidst six wins for the season and this year was third in the One Thousand Guineas (Eng-I). Her dam is the Kheleyf mare Kheleyf's Silver.
Ferguson also bought 2015 Investec Epsom Oak (Eng-I) winner Qualify for 1.6 million guineas ($2,529,404) from The Castlebridge Consignment.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock is out of 2008 Park Hill (Ire-II) runner-up Perihelion, who is a daughter of Galileo out of a winning half sister to European highweight Eva Luna, the dam of Brian Boru, Sea Moon, and unraced Soviet Moon, the last-mentioned dam of European champion 3-year-old and 2010 Epsom Derby (Eng-I) winner Workforce.
"It is always lovely to have an Oaks winner," Ferguson said. "She is a lovely, scopey mare who was a very good racehorse and her Oaks-winning day was extraordinary.
"I have one or two ideas as to covering plans, but the boss will decide."
Also among the day's seven-figure horses was 8-year-old mare Seta, who was knocked down to Hugo Lascelles for 1.1 million guineas ($1,738,968) on behalf of an unnamed U.S. client.
The daughter of Pivotal out of the Generous mare Bombazine will be bred to Claiborne Farm sire War Front in 2016. The mare hails from the family that includes the Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) winner Barathea and the Fillies' Mile (eng-I) winner Gossamer. Group II-placed Seta was offered by Sara Cumani's Fittocks Stud on behalf of Gerard Leigh's daughter, the late Sarah Leigh.
"They are looking for deep European bloodlines, it is a long term plan but this is a wonderful established British family," Lascelles said of Seta, whose only starter to date is 2-year-old winner Seastrom (Oasis Dream).
Also among American-based buyers, Marette Farrell purchased three horses for Mount Brilliant Stables for an aggregate 1.04 million guineas ($1,644,115), including Baroda and Colbinstown Studs' Dame Marie (Smart Strike), runner-up in the 2014 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (gr. IIT) and in foal to Invincible Spirit. She was the top expenditure at 500,000 guineas ($709,440). Waterway Run (Arch ), a grade III/group III winner offered by European Sales Management for U.S. owner Martin Schwartz, was bought in foal to Australia for 450,000 guineas ($711,396).
Eaton Sales made two purchases: from John Troy's agency multiple stakes winner Artistic Jewel (Excellent Art), offered in foal to Australia, for 280,000 guineas ($442,646) and Mountain View Stud's stakes-placed Auction (Mr. Greeley), in foal to Ashford Stud sire Scat Daddy , a leading sire of 2-year-olds this year, for 260,000 guineas ($411,028).
