Ingrid Gjelsten looses VDL Edgar M after training accident

Edgar M, a 15-year-old gelding by Arezzo VDL, has died after a tragic training accident. The celebrated Dutch Warmblood gelding had been owned by Norwegian rider Ingrid Gjelsten since 2023. He had a long career, with appearances at the Olympics, CSI5* Grand Prix events and World Cup qualifiers. He was previously ridden by Brazilian Marlon Modolo Zanotelli, who achieved many of Edgar's career highlights, including participation in the Tokyo Olympics and several major victories in Europe.

Under Gjelsten, Edgar M moved seamlessly into a new chapter, with notable victories, including at the Desert Circuit in California earlier this year. Ingrid often described him as her “once-in-a-lifetime horse” and praised his willingness, kindness and the confidence he gave her in the ring. Their partnership quickly blossomed, with memorable successes including a CSI4* Grand Prix victory.

"Edgar, my once in a lifetime horse. The best partner I could ever dream of. I can’t believe you are gone," Ingrid wrote on her social media. "A traumatic accident happened training yesterday… I don’t know how to go on without you… You gave me everything, and we shared so many unforgettable moments together. Everyone who met you loved you.
I will miss you forever."
