Just this past weekend, there have been three individuals who have reported that they were given GHB (The Date Rape Drug) by unsuspecting assailants at local Wellington bars and nightclubs. All three unnamed individuals claimed they were served drinks, were socializing with friends and local equine related acquaintances, and then lost all consciousness. Upon further research, neither of the three candidates had more than 4 drinks that day and have never “blacked out”. As this seems more of a mere coincidence at first, this is something that has been continually happening year after year during the equine season here in Wellington, and the reports are only growing larger and larger. Last year, we have personally been told that there have been over 30 counts of individuals given the GHB drug at these locations and that is only from those who have came forward to us. I am sure local police and officials are looking into the matter, however, the anonymity of the crime make it hard to directly tie one individual to a GHB crime. “The crime is quick, anonymous, and usually will leave their victim completely incapacitated within an hour”. The ingestion of GHB can lead to permanent brain damage and even death. If you want to be safe follow these simple rules: 1. Only order drinks from your bartender or server. 2. Do not leave anyone in charge of your drink. 3. Do not share drinks. 4. Always bring a friend or friends to ensure you get home safe. 5. Do not associate with those who are suspected of giving innocent people GHB. source: Press/ Equestrian Empire/ Equnews.com
