The FEI Tribunal has issued its final decision in the case involving Australian dressage and eventing rider Heath Ryan. The rider has been suspended for eighteen months due to horse abuse.
Investigation and violations
The investigation by the International Equestrian Federation began over a year ago following reports submitted to the FEI and Equestrian Australia, as well as the circulation of a video on social media depicting abusive training methods.
The tribunal ruled that Ryan violated Article 142.1 of the FEI Regulations. Furthermore, he breached the FEI Code of Conduct for the Welfare of the Horse (Article 164.12(i)), damaging the image of equestrian sport and the FEI.
Suspension and fine
The eighteen-month suspension took effect from the date of his provisional suspension on June 12, 2025, and runs through December 12, 2026. In addition to the suspension, the rider was fined 3,000 Swiss francs and ordered to pay 3,000 Swiss francs toward the FEI's legal costs. The total amount of 6,000 Swiss francs equals approximately 6,400 euros.
