Many riders decided to take it easy this first day and out of the 52 combinations 29 ended with penalties for time. In first place it was French rider Julien Epaillard and his Quatrin de la Roque LM (by Quick Star) with whom he finished in 24.45 seconds. It was Dutch rider Harrie Smolders who followed on a second place in the saddle of his Zinius (by Nabab de Rêve) with whom he clocked 26.14 seconds. The Brazilian rider Yuri Mansur and his Corrado I son Unita Ask came in third place with 27.36 seconds on the clock. While American rider Audrey Coulter and her Cas 2 (by Indoctro) finished in fourth place, followed by Brazil's Eduardo Menezes and Sunshine (by Diamant de Semilly) who ended in fifth place.
