Philippa Humphreys suffered a fatal fall today while on course at the Jersey Fresh International CCI***. Humphreys, 33, a British citizen living in Rockford, Mich., was riding her own Rich N Famous, 13-year-old Dutch-Thoroughbred gelding, when they fell at fence 16, a table, on the cross-country course. Humphreys was an experienced rider through the CCI*** level and had brought the gelding up from the novice level. Humphreys was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, N.J., where she was pronounced dead by the attending physician. Rich N Famous was not injured. Jersey Fresh International released a statement on their Facebook page. "All of us connected with the Jersey Fresh International are deeply saddened by today's tragic news and we extend our condolences to Philippa's husband, Peter, and to her entire family," said Dan Wunderlich, Chairman of the Jersey Fresh Three-Day Event. The event confirmed they are planning to continue. CCI*** and CCI** divisions will finish out the weekend with show jumping tomorrow. Jersey Fresh safety officer Rusty Lowe gave a statement at the conclusion of cross-country. "Philippa Humphreys experienced a rotational fall at fence number 16, a table, at approximately 12:38 p.m. today. When she went down, a bystander nurse close by immediately went to her aid, initiated CPR, medical staff was dispatched immediately and arrived within 45 seconds. Resuscitative measures were taken, and advanced life support were given. She was attempted to be resuscitated on the scene, and was transported to a local trauma center where she was pronounced dead appromimately one hour later. "The medical staff that was on duty today at the Jersey Fresh did a tremendous job and gave a heroic effort to attempt to treat and resuscitate Philippa. Unfortunately her injuries were severe enough that she could not be resuscitated. Her family was notified, and the hospital is working out any other details that might have to be done at this point."
