The Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix in Riesenbeck once again delivered sport of the highest calibre. In a nail-biting jump-off between the world's best combinations, Germany's Gerrit Nieberg gave the home crowd something to cheer about.
Riding his BWP gelding Ping Pong van de Lentamel (Emerald Van 't Ruytershof), he remained double clear and clocked the fastest time of 46.99 seconds, securing victory and the impressive prize money of €107,250.
The biggest challenge today was to stay clear, said a relieved Gerrit Nieberg after the competition: "I already had a great, great feeling in the first round. There were two very demanding jumps, so we didn't see many clear rounds. In the jump-off, I just tried to ride a smooth round. It worked and I am more than satisfied. In the jump-off, I saw the first two riders on the screen, but I couldn't really tell if they were very fast or not. As I said, I just tried to stick to my plan."
Peder Fredricson finished in second place. The Swedish Olympic champion rode Alcapone des Carmille (Diamant De Semilly) flawlessly and set a time of 48.17 seconds. This put him just ahead of Harrie Smolders, who rode a fantastic round with Bingo du Parc (Mylord Carthago). Smolders finished clear in 48.78 seconds, earning him third place on the podium.
Fourth place went to the young Brit Jack Whitaker. He showed that the new generation can also compete at the highest level. With Jack JL (Quasimodo Z), he also remained double clear and clocked 49.66 seconds, good for a nice top ranking.
The top five was rounded off by Max Kühner from Austria. Riding EIC Cooley Jump the Q (Pacino), he rode the fastest jump-off of the day in 46.56 seconds, but a jumping fault prevented him from winning. Nevertheless, this performance earned him fifth place.
