In a scintillating prelude to tomorrow’s Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Doha, Hans-Dieter Dreher and Vestmalle des Cotis (Baloubet du Rouet x Landor S) delivered a masterclass in speed and precision to claim victory under the dazzling lights of the Longines Arena at Al Shaqab. The electrifying 1.50m jump-off class, designed by Peter Schumacher, tested the world’s elite horse and rider combinations to perfection, delivering an evening of high-stakes sport.
Spain’s Eduardo Alvarez Aznar came agonizingly close, finishing just 0.99 seconds behind Dreher with his exceptional partner, Legend (Ogano Sitte), securing the silver position. Meanwhile, German maestro Marcus Ehning and his striking grey, DPS Revere, produced a textbook round to complete the podium in third place.
A thrilled Dreher reflected on his win: "I’m really happy today. My horse jumped amazingly—I know he is really, really fast. It was a quick jump-off, and normally he doesn’t favour left turns, but today he did!"
The first round proved testing with poles falling all around the course keeping some of the biggest names out of the jump-off like Abdel Saïd, Daniel Deusser, Christian Ahlmann, Niels Bruynseels and Christian Kukuk.
How the 7 rider jump-off played out:
Leading the charge, Scott Brash and Hello Mango set a strong benchmark, delivering a flawless round in 39.42 seconds and forcing the rest of the field to take risks if they wanted to surpass the British rider’s time.
Determined to seize victory, Dreher and Vestmalle des Cotis wasted no time, accelerating from the start and executing an aggressive yet controlled round. With foot-perfect turns and daring strides, they stormed across the finish line nearly five seconds ahead of Brash, igniting cheers from the crowd.
Spain’s Mariano Martinez Bastida and Jup looked poised to challenge but saw their chances slip away with an unfortunate rail down. His compatriot, Eduardo Alvarez Aznar, then took to the arena aboard Ledgend, delivering a sensational round that ultimately fell just short of Dreher’s blistering pace.
Positioning himself as a serious contender for tomorrow’s LGCT Grand Prix of Doha, Marcus Ehning and DPS Revere once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the sport’s finest tacticians. His precise and efficient round in 37.12 seconds secured third place as he anxiously watched the final two competitors attempt to unseat him.
Philippe Rozier and Dirty Sweet pushed hard but paid the price for their ambitious approach, finishing seventh after rolling a pole. Meanwhile, the youngest competitor in the jump-off, 21-year-old Iñigo Lopez De La Osa Franco, opted for a steady, careful ride with Jade. His double-clear performance in 41.90 seconds ensured a respectable finish but confirmed Dreher as the night’s victor before the final fence.
As the excitement builds, all eyes now turn to tomorrow’s Super Saturday, the first of the season, where the stakes are at their highest. The world’s best will battle for the opening Golden Ticket to the prestigious LGCT Super Grand Prix at the GC Prague Playoffs in November.
