Ireland's remarkable run at the CSIO5* Rome Piazza di Siena – Master d'Inzeo continued on Saturday afternoon as rising star Tom Wachman added another Irish victory to the tally. Following wins by Denis Lynch on Thursday and Jordan Coyle earlier in the day, the youngest member of the Irish squad delivered a winning performance in the prestigious €105,500 Loro Piana Trophy.
The 1.55m feature class remained wide open until the very last fence. Fourteen combinations qualified for the jump-off from a starting field of 60 riders, but none could match the pace set by Wachman. Riding Do It Easy (Vigo Cece), the Irishman delivered a flawless jump-off in 35.95 seconds, becoming the only rider to break the 36-second barrier.
France's Nina Mallevaey came closest to challenging for the win. Partnering My Clementine (Obos Quality 004), she produced a double-clear effort to secure second place in 36.26 seconds. Germany's Richard Vogel completed the podium aboard Cloudio (Casall), stopping the clock in 36.58 seconds.
Ireland also claimed fourth place thanks to Cian O'Connor and Gospel Tame (Quadrio Tame). The pair crossed the finish line in 36.70 seconds, while Italy's Giulia Martinengo Marquet delighted the home crowd by rounding out the top five aboard Scuderia 1918 Calle Deluxe (Cesano 2) in exactly 37.00 seconds.
For Wachman, born in 2005, the victory marked a dream debut at Piazza di Siena. The young Irish rider praised both his horse and the course designed by Uliano Vezzani after securing the biggest win of his week in Rome.
"It was a fantastic class. The course designed by 'The Maestro' Vezzani was quite complex, delicate and demanding for the horses. That's why I'm very pleased with how Do It Easy and I performed. Winning at my first appearance at Piazza di Siena is the best possible feeling. This show, with its history and setting, is truly incredible. I'm really happy to be here."
