Successful breeder Paul Wendeln celebrates 90th birthday

Paul Wendeln, one of the most successful Oldenburg breeders, celebrates his 90th birthday on 23 September. The two mare lines of Cinderella and Juliane III, which have been cultivated at his Wendeln Stud in Garrel, Lower Saxony/Germany, for over 50 years, have produced over 30 licensed stallions, more than 90 premium mares, including five champion mares, as well as over 220 highly successful sport horses.

It all started with a snow-white billy goat - which Paul Wendeln got as a present as a child instead of the pony he longed for and which he harnessed to do transport journeys for his parents' coal and agricultural business. It was not until much later that Paul Wendeln was allowed to learn to ride. He preferred to ride in a jumping saddle.

From the beginning of the 1960s, horse breeding became the focus of the entrepreneur, who, together with his brother Bernhard, built up their father's bakery into a group with well-known brands such as Golden Toast and Lieken Urkorn. Paul Wendeln acquired his first broodmare from Georg Vorwerk: the bay Markgraf Orient daughter Heidemei. She was bred to Furioso II and produced the two advanced dressage horses Flinthörn and Format.

In the course of an exchange deal, the Dutch-born Cinderella (by Armand) moved into her stall at Gestüt Wendeln in 1975. From here, the framy vixen founded her own dressage dynasty, which produced, among others, the Bundessieger family Chinchilla, Chrystal and C'Est la Vie (all by Zeus), the Bundessieger mare C'Dur (by Landadel) and the quintet Sir Heinrich OLD, Cindy OLD, Candy OLD, Caty OLD and Casey OLD (all by Sir Donnerhall I). The latter full siblings set an unprecedented record: all five won the Bundeschampionat.

Candy OLD also won bronze at the World Championships for five-year-old dressage horses as the best mare and is being prepared for higher tasks by Helen Langehanenberg.

The two OS Champion mares Jella (by Last Man Standing) and Jurwina (by Diarado), the OS Reserve Champion mare Jurwina's Girl (by Cornet Obolensky), the Oldenburg Jumping Champion Doriano (by. Diarado), the Grand Prix placed Aquino, Aquarell PW (both by Argentinus) and Jamela (by Last Man Standing) under Denis Nielsen, the Bundeschampionat finalist Journesse du Rouet (by Balou du Rouet) as well as the HLP reserve winner Action Hero PW (by Action-Breaker).

In 2015, Paul Wendeln handed over the management of his stud to his son Peter Wendeln, who continues breeding with the same fortune. The latest "coup" from the Wendeln family: the three-year-old licensed stallion Ci bon, who is stationed at the stallion station of Jens and Beatrice Hoffrogge, and who is to follow in the hoof prints of his full siblings Sir Heinrich OLD, Cindy OLD, Candy OLD, Caty OLD and Casey OLD ...
