He was the hero of the Hamburg Derby, the rider who, at 70 years old, was still competing at the top in the toughest course in the world. When Karl-Heinz Markus placed third in the first qualifier this spring, he beamed: “I actually wanted to win today. My kids will say, ‘Why did you take it so easy?’” And laughing, he continued: “I’m proud that I can still give the younger riders a run for their money. If I have a good day, I can beat anyone.”
Now the former paratrooper of the German Armed Forces has lost his greatest battle — the one against cancer.
The long-time Derby organizers from Engarde found the right words to express their grief over the great sportsman:
“We mourn the loss of Karl-Heinz Markus, a passionate rider who continuously impressed us with his courage and determination on the competition grounds in Klein Flottbek. His rides will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with all his loved ones, friends, and companions.”
The next Derby without Karl-Heinz Markus — it's hard to imagine.
