Can Germany triumph again in Barcelona?

It has been quite a year for German Jumping and it could get even better at the first-ever Longines League of Nations™ Final in Barcelona at the start of October. A year ago, the Germans, under Chef d’Equipe Otto Becker, tasted glory in the Spanish city as they won the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ Final. They will now take on the other seven qualifiers and hosts Spain in the Longines League of Nations™ Final at the stunning Real Club de Polo de Barcelona on Sunday, October 6.

Germany will hope to repeat the memorable performance that saw them soar to glory in Barcelona a year ago. They finished on a score of zero penalty points to take the title for the first time since 2016, with France and Belgium taking silver and bronze respectively.

The German win was cemented by a clear round from anchor athlete Richard Vogel aboard United Touch S. Also on the team were Christian Kukuk & Checker 47, Hans-Dieter Dreher & Elysium and Jana Wargers & Dorette Old.

Afterwards, Becker said: “I was unbelievably happy with the team all week long. They did a super job!”

Following that success a year ago, Germany went on to make equestrian sport history by becoming the first-ever winners of a Longines League of Nations show. Jörne Sprehe posted a brilliant double clear aboard Sprehe Hot Easy to make sure of first place in Abu Dhabi in February.

The Germans made a fantastic start to the Team competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but ultimately the Team medal evaded them. However, the German national anthem was played loudly and proudly at the Palace of Versailles as Christian Kukuk was crowned Olympic Jumping champion with Checker 47. Their fabulous performances meant a first Olympic Individual Jumping title for Germany since 1996 and shows that the nation's Jumping talents are in the midst of a real golden period.

Kukuk and Checker 47 have been selected for Barcelona along with Sprehe, Wargers, Andre Thieme and Richard Vogel. We can be sure the Germans will be travelling to Spain with determination to keep their good run going.

In Barcelona, Germany and hosts Spain will be joined by qualifiers Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Brazil, France, The Netherlands and the USA. The finalists will be looking to make history by becoming the first champions of the new Longines League of Nations™ series.
